Managing pain with pain relief pills

We all suffer from pain; be it from surgery, a headache, toothache, backache or other location of pain. Sometimes we can manage the pain with exercise, diet and rest but other times we need help managing pain with pain relief pills.

Many physicians and other experts in the medication field suggest that when you need pain pills, you stay with one physician so that your care can be managed and documented for your safety and to ensure that there is no abuse of the drug.

The different kinds of pain medication that are given depends on the location and severity of the pain, and how often the pain medication is given. For instance, short acting drugs that last 2-6 hours are usually given for minor to moderate pain, while long acting drugs that last 12-24 hours are given for pain after an operation, or for a more serious illness. In addition, there are new “breakthrough” medications that are given when the pain medication that the patient is taking, stops relieving the pain. This type of medication can be given even though the next dose is not scheduled for several hours.

It is also best when managing pain with pain relief pills, that you set some specific goals for your pain relief. For every pain need, you will need to assess how much you will need to take and for how long. And, it is up to you and your physician to decide when your pain medication should be decreased or increased. You will need to decide if the pain is lessening or getting worse and this will help your physician decide what the next step will be concerning your pain medication.
